GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION OF TOBYHANNA TOWNSHIP

April 15, 2015
Clymer Library, 115 Firehouse Road, Pocono Pines, Pa.

Speaker: John Layton, "History of the Ace Store”

The meeting was called to order by Rick Bodenschatz. He welcomed all the attendees and encouraged them to join HATT. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Frank McDevitt.

May meeting: Rick announced that the next meeting on May 21st would be dedicated to looking at some of our archival treasures. This fun work session will be led by Scarlett Rehrig. Attendees will be divided into groups and each group will file and organize some of the items. Each team will tell the others about the items they have found and then these archives will be put into the cabinets.

Library project: Rick also told us about a library project being conducted by students from Marywood University. The students will look into the library’s current activities and then they will come up with some ideas as to how the library could be improved. A reception with 20-30 students will be held for them to present their ideas.

Dues are due: Members and guests were reminded that it is time to renew their HATT membership. Forms were available at the sign-in desk.

Speaker: John Layton is a three-time presenter, a HATT member, and a descendant of the Ace family. He spoke about the Ace Store formerly located in Swiftwater.

The Ace family opened the store in 1851 and it remained a family business through more than eight generations. The store sold everything and at times functioned more like a trading post.

John showed pictures of the many items sold and the equipment that was used at that time. When the store closed in 1972, the family members each took some of the antique items from the store. John is in the process of getting these items back in his possession with the idea of converting the old Ace Store into a museum.

Following the interesting talk, Rick presented John with a certificate of appreciation.

The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
Jeanne Dyer, HATT Secretary
